Exelon Corporation is a leading provider of electricity and natural gas. The company operates through two segments: utilities and generation. Exelon’s utilities segment delivers electricity and natural gas to more than 10 million customers in Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania through its six utility companies.

This segment includes the operations of ComEd, PECO, Pepco, Delmarva Power, Atlantic City Electric, and BGE. Exelon’s generation segment owns and operates a diversified fleet of power plants that generate electricity sold in wholesale markets across the United States.

In terms of its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, Exelon is a mixed bag. The company has made significant progress on reducing its emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), and it has set ambitious goals for further reductions. On the social front, Exelon’s charitable foundation gives back to the communities where the company operates. However, the company’s nuclear power plants have come under scrutiny for their potential environmental and health risks.

Exelon’s utility companies are subject to state and federal regulations regarding the emission of GHGs. As a result, the company has made significant progress in reducing its emissions over the past few years.

What We Like
  • Generates revenue from nuclear plants which are low-carbon emitting energy sources

  • Exelon has been ranked as one of the top utilities for renewable energy usage

  • Nuclear plants can pose environmental and safety risks

What We Don't Like
  • A strong track record of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance

  • The company has been criticized for its lobbying efforts against clean energy initiatives
