Company Profile & Business Model Overview

Eversource Energy (NYSE: ES) is a regulated public utility holding company delivering electricity, natural gas and water across Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, serving about 4.6 million customers (roughly 3.4 million electric, 901,000 gas and 248,000 water). Its subsidiaries include CL&P, NSTAR Electric and PSNH (electric), Yankee Gas, NSTAR Gas and EGMA (gas) and Aquarion (water), organized into electric distribution, electric transmission, gas distribution and water distribution segments. After exiting offshore wind, it is concentrating on its regulated transmission and distribution business and grid modernization.

Sustainability Strengths & Catalysts (Pros)

  • Refocusing on regulated electric and gas transmission, a lower-risk model that still enables broader grid decarbonization.
  • A long-standing, stable regulated utility with reliability and clean-energy enablement goals across New England.
  • Exited capital-intensive offshore wind via a roughly $1.1B divestiture, strengthening its balance sheet and focus.

Material Risks & Governance Concerns (Cons)

  • The offshore-wind exit booked added liabilities (about a $285M increase) and losses that dented near-term results.
  • Heavy regulated-utility capital spending and rate-case dependence expose it to regulatory and interest-rate risk.
